| Gala Night Celebrates the Charter of Solon Rotary Ninety five people attended the gala celebration of the chartering of the Solon Centennial Rotary Club on April 28th at the Signature Country Club. What began last August as a small meeting at Bob Evans grew to 33 members when the club was formally chartered on February 23rd, 2005. February 23rd is a significant date for Rotary International as it was on that date in 1905 in Chicago, Illinois that The world's first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois, USA, was formed by Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. The name "Rotary" derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices. The Solon Centennial Rotary Club is the 57th to join District 6630 of Rotary International. Club establishment was spearheaded by District Club New Development Co-Chairman, David Wonsettler of the Twinsburg Rotary and Bob Prevette of the Nordonia Hills Rotary and supported by seven sponsoring Rotary Clubs. Bob Prevette opened the ceremony with a proclamation from Mayor Kevin Patton. Keynote speaker for the evening was Dr. Don Sazima, Past District Governor who entitled his speech “From the Ashes” to symbolize how this new vibrant club has risen in a locale where a former Rotary Club in Solon had some years ago died out. Solon Centennial Club officers are President, Dennis Demshar, President Elect, Peter Balunek, Secretary, Stacie Beck and Treasurer, Marty Baris. Other members rounding out the board are: David Pomeranz, Community Service, David Schmader, Vocational Service, and Surinder Singh, International Service. John Groth is Club Sergeant at Arms. |

| On September 22, 2005 The Rotary Club of Solon sponsored a benefit golf outing at Aurora Golf and Country Club for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. In conjunction with Al Jenkins, former Cleveland Browns player and a member of the 1972 Miami Dolphins Super Bowl team, the Club raised $3000.00. Mr. Jenkin's employer, Budweiser, matched that dollar for dollar for a total of $6.000.00 The Rotary Club of Solon wishes to thank all the participants, Aurora Golf and Country Club, Mr. Jenkins and Budweiser for making this such a great success. |
